Step back into one of the most transformative years in British music history with the 1997 Mercury Music Prize Albums of the Year collection. This essential compilation captures a pivotal moment when the industry looked beyond established rock giants to celebrate the bold, the underground, and the cutting-edge.
The 1997 ceremony remains legendary for the shocking, triumphant victory of Roni Size & Reprazent with their genre-defining album New Forms. Defying the odds against heavy hitters like Radiohead’s OK Computer and The Prodigy’s The Fat of the Land, the panel’s choice underscored a commitment to modernity and the burgeoning drum and bass movement. New Forms is a masterful, dreamlike record—an atmospheric journey that perfectly balances intricate beats with deep, nocturnal textures.
