Released in 2005 on Constellation, Horses In The Sky marks a pivotal evolution for the project led by Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s Efrim Menuck. As the fifth studio release under the expanded moniker "Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band," this album features a seven-member ensemble pushing the boundaries of their trademark post-rock sound.
This record stands out as the band's first release to feature lyrics on every track, marking a definitive shift in their artistic identity. Described by the band as "6 busted waltzes for world wars 4 thru 6," the album oscillates between themes of sociopolitical frustration and profound, desperate love. From the acoustic, protest-folk simplicity of the title track to the intimate, campfire-side recording of "Hang On To Each Other," Horses In The Sky captures a raw, fervent emotion.
Key features of this release include:
- Expanded Orchestration: A richer, more expansive sound featuring a seven-piece ensemble.
- Lyrical Depth: The first project to commit to vocals across the entire album.
- Atmospheric Production: Recorded at Hotel2Tango, including organic, live-capture elements like the roaring fire on "Hang On To Each Other."
- Critical Acclaim: Widely regarded as a career high-point for the group, blending orchestral slow-builds with visceral, melodic vocal performances.
