The Oppressed – Music For Hooligans (Step-1 Music, 1996)
Originally released in 1996, Music For Hooligans is a definitive document of Cardiff’s premier anti-fascist Oi! legends, The Oppressed. Following their earlier raw demos, this studio album marked a significant step forward for the band, featuring superior production values and stronger melodic hooks without sacrificing their trademark power and street-level grit.
Led by Roddy Moreno, a pivotal figure in the UK SHARP movement, the band delivers a raucous, upbeat set that feels like a post-match celebration. The album is a balanced mix of original terrace anthems and inspired cover versions. Highlights include the Cardiff postcode tribute "CF3" and the band’s unique take on tracks by The Farm ("All Together Now"), The Clash, The Newtown Neurotics, and even Manfred Mann’s "54321".
Whether re-recording earlier tracks to give them their "just-deserts" or delivering blistering new Oi! staples, this release captures the spirit and attitude of a band that has remained uncompromising for over four decades. A must-have for fans of classic British Oi! and street punk.
