Spiritualized returns with Sweet Heart, Sweet Light, a 2012 release that stands as one of the most uplifted and refined moments in Jason Pierce’s (J. Spaceman) storied career. Originally conceived under the working title "Huh?" during a period of intensive medical treatment, the album defies expectations by delivering a triumphant, high-fidelity experience rather than a somber one.
Recorded for the Domino (Double Six) label, this album finds Pierce acting as his own genre, blending "super-church-sized" arrangements with the intimate fragility of his signature space-rock sound. Fans of Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space will find much to love here, as the record utilizes large orchestras and gospel choirs to elevate blues-rock into sprawling, cinematic vistas.
Album Highlights:
- "Hey Jane" – A standout nine-minute epic featuring hypnotic slide guitar, cymbal crashes, and driving energy.
- "Get What You Deserve" – A display of the raw, immediate songwriting Pierce is known for.
- Production – Meticulously mixed over eight months to capture what Pierce describes as "glory and beauty" alongside "intimacy and fragility."
Whether you are a lifelong follower of the space-rock progenitors or a newcomer to the "rock'n'roll gospel" of Spiritualized, Sweet Heart, Sweet Light is an essential, high-water mark of 2012 indie rock.
