Sonic Youth – Screaming Fields Of Sonic Love (Geffen Records, 1995)
Dive into the foundational era of alternative rock with Screaming Fields of Sonic Love. Released in 1995 to promote Geffen’s reissues of the band's 1980s catalog, this 17-track compilation serves as the definitive primer for Sonic Youth’s pre-major label years. It bridges the gap between their raw, avant-garde beginnings and their global breakthrough with Goo.
This collection captures a high-energy portrait of a band redefining guitar music. Spanning from the harsh, industrial landscapes of Confusion Is Sex to the quasi-symphonic masterpiece Daydream Nation, the album showcases the "unexpected noises" and fierce experimentalism that earned the band an A- grade from legendary critic Robert Christgau. It is an essential gateway for fans who want to explore the band's transition from noise-rock pioneers to indie-rock icons.
Key Highlights:
- Essential Anthems: Includes "Teen Age Riot," "Kotton Krown," and "Inhuman."
- Rarities & Covers: Features the unique Madonna-inspired cover "Into the Groove(y)" by the Ciccone Youth project.
- Spans 1982–1988: Features tracks from Bad Moon Rising, EVOL, and Sister.
- Genre: Rock & Pop - Alternative / Avant-Garde Noise-Rock.
Whether you are a longtime follower or a newcomer curious about the band's "pre-corporate rock" days, this compilation offers a vivid sampling of the unconventional song structures and grinding riffs that defined 20th-century experimental music.
