Orbital, the legendary duo of Phil and Paul Hartnoll, take a clinical dive into the world of cinema with their 2003 release, Octane (Original Soundtrack Score). Released via EMI, this album captures a distinct shift in the brothers' output, trading their signature festival-ready anthems for a cold, sub-zero atmosphere designed to haunt the silver screen.
The score is described as a collection of ascetic, atmospheric vignettes. Listeners can expect a soundscape built from:
- Clanking metallic samples and rhythmic industrial textures.
- Ambient, spooky vocal layers and "cyborg-like" melodies.
- A stone-cold, clinical sheen that evokes a sense of modern angst and urban malaise.
While experimental and "inhuman" in its precision, Octane remains an essential curiosity for Orbital completionists. It represents a departure from their warmer, melodic "electro-genius" work, offering instead a faceless and brooding sonic experience. For fans of In Sides or Snivilisation, this soundtrack provides a fascinating look at the Hartnolls' ability to craft "pre-millennial tension" through minimalist, disciplined electronica.
Featured Tracks include: "Nayaflob" and "Healio."
