Nouvelle Vague – Bande À Part (2006)
Following the success of their eponymous debut, the French collective Nouvelle Vague returned in 2006 with Bande À Part. This sophisticated project continues the band’s signature concept: reimagining iconic 1980s new wave classics through the lens of cool, breezy bossa nova. It is a stylish, lounge-ready collection that invites listeners to trade the dramatic aesthetic of the 80s for a sun-soaked, rhythmic atmosphere.
The album strikes a thoughtful balance between well-known anthems and deeper cuts, showcasing the versatility and "secret" lives of these familiar melodies. While some tracks lean into the dreamy, melancholic side of the genre, others—like the playful bossa-style take on the Buzzcocks' “Ever Fallen In Love?”—bring a fresh, surprising energy to the source material.
Highlights of Bande À Part:
- Creative Reinterpretations: A mix of major hits like Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” and hidden gems like Heaven 17’s “Let Me Go.”
- Atmospheric Vocals: Features distinct, haunting performances from vocalists like Melanie Pain and Siija.
- Perfect For: Listeners who enjoy clever jazz-pop fusion and a relaxed, effortless musical aesthetic.
Whether you are a completist or new to their work, Bande À Part remains a clever, fun entry point into the Nouvelle Vague project.
