Lowgold – Just Backward Of Square (Nude Records, 2001)
Released during a pivotal moment in the UK indie scene, Just Backward Of Square is the critically acclaimed debut from Hertfordshire four-piece Lowgold. Originally heralded as the "new Coldplay" upon its release, the album remains a masterclass in shifting dynamics—effortlessly blending sumptuously languid, dual-guitar instrumentation with moments of explosive, soul-piercing power.
This record manages to be lo-fi yet anthemic, resigned yet uplifting. From the shimmering, melodic highs of standout singles to the brooding, ethereal drones that close the experience, the album captures a band operating at the height of their creative powers. Whether you are a fan of 2000s indie or deep-diving into the Nude Records catalog, this album is a cherished classic of the era.
Key Tracks:
- Beauty Dies Young: A shimmering, glorious pop moment.
- Counterfeit: A diamond-sharp, high-energy keystone track.
- In Amber: A mechanical, atmospheric standout originally featured on the 108 EP.
- Never Alone: A quintessential live fan-favorite.
