Faster Pussycat’s third studio album, Whipped!, released on Elektra Records in 1992, captures a legendary Sunset Strip band evolving during a pivotal moment in rock history. While the music landscape was shifting toward grunge, Faster Pussycat refined their signature sleaze rock with a more sophisticated, varied, and occasionally dark approach.
The album showcases the band's growth through a diverse range of styles—from the gritty hard rock of "Big Dictionary" and the Aerosmith-inspired groove of "Body Thief" to the funk-infused "Loose Booty" and the Southern-rock flair of "Poison Ivy." Highlights include the power-pop-tinged opener "Nonstop to Nowhere" and the poignant "Mr. Lovedog," a moving tribute to the late Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone.
Though it arrived as "big hair" was being supplanted by flannel, Whipped! remains a fascinating snapshot of a band hitting their stride. Whether you are looking for raunchy barroom anthems or a more experimental touch of industrial influence, this release proves that Faster Pussycat was far more than a one-dimensional glam act.
