Candlemass’s landmark debut album, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, is an essential classic that helped define the doom metal genre. Standing in stark contrast to the fast-paced thrash and NWOBHM movements of the mid-1980s, the band drew inspiration from the slowest, darkest cuts of Black Sabbath to deliver a crushing, authentic heavy metal masterpiece.
Driven by drop-tuned, distorted riffs, expansive classical- and medieval-tinged melodies, and the powerful vocals of Johan Längquist, the album balances dramatic weight with raw simplicity. From the mournful acoustic-to-electric transition of opener "Solitude" to monumental tracks like "Under the Oak" and "A Sorcerer’s Pledge," the record showcases a band united in creating pure, heavy atmosphere.
