Released in 1998, UNKLE’s Psyence Fiction stands as a landmark collaboration between Mo' Wax label head James Lavelle and the legendary DJ Shadow. Often described as a "strangely isolated masterpiece," this album is a bold, ambitious fusion of trip-hop, rock, and cinematic soundscapes that defied the rigid genre rules of its era.
A true "superstar project," the record features an incredible roster of guest artists, including Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Richard Ashcroft (The Verve), Mike D (Beastie Boys), Kool G Rap, and instrumental contributions from Metallica's Jason Newsted. It remains a definitive '90s aggregator, blending turntable wizardry with diverse, genre-blurring textures.
Key Highlights:
- Essential Tracks: "Rabbit in Your Headlights," "Lonely Soul," and "Unreal."
- Production: Masterfully helmed by DJ Shadow, showcasing pioneering sampling and percussive depth.
- Legacy: Initially polarized critics, but now widely regarded as one of the most significant and underrated electronic albums of the late 90s.
Whether you're a long-time fan of trip-hop or uncovering this monolith of electronic music for the first time, Psyence Fiction offers a dense, rewarding journey that remains as relevant today as it was upon its release.
