The return of an icon. Released on Domino Records in 2012, Love at the Bottom of the Sea marks a triumphant return to the synthesizers that defined The Magnetic Fields' early sound. After a decade of acoustic and "no-synth" experimentation, Stephin Merritt and company embrace cutting-edge electronic arrangements, resulting in their most joyous and liberated record in years.

This collection of 15 short, sharp vignettes serves as a masterclass in "anti-love" songwriting. Merits' signature darkly comical wit is on full display, blending themes of romance, lust, and unattainable desire with the intricate melodies and sharp wordplay fans have come to adore.

Key Highlights:

  • Andrew in Drag: A standout, instantly classic track that ranks among the band's best work since 69 Love Songs.
  • Dynamic Performances: Features memorable contributions from Claudia Gonson on tracks like Your Girlfriend’s Face and the cacophonous The Horrible Party.
  • A Polished Finish: The album closes on a high note with the elegant, synth-driven All She Cares About is Mariachi.

Whether you are a long-time devotee or a newcomer to Merritt’s obtuse, romantic universe, this album is a must-own addition to your collection.
