Released in 2006, It’s Never Been Like That marks a pivotal turning point for French indie-pop quartet Phoenix. Moving away from the atmospheric textures of their earlier work, the band embraced a more direct, guitar-driven sound, famously earning them the moniker of the "soft-rock Strokes."
This album captures the band at their most cohesive, blending click-track precision with a casual, infectious joie de vivre. With Thomas Mars’ signature restrained yet expressive vocals riding over tidy, jangling guitar melodies, the record stands as a masterclass in compact, catchy guitar-pop. From the upbeat energy of "Long Distance Call" to the rhythmic precision of "Courtesy Laughs," the album is a flawless front-to-back listening experience.
Often cited as an underrated gem that paved the way for their later global success, It’s Never Been Like That is an essential addition to any indie rock collection.
