Experience the raw, emotive power of Peter Hammill with this captivating 2009 Voiceprint reissue of In The Passionskirche (Berlin MCMXCII). Recorded live on April 11, 1992, at the historic Passionskirche in Berlin, this album captures the iconic Van Der Graaf Generator frontman at a creative peak, performing in a stark, intimate solo setting.
The performance finds Hammill "traversing a tightrope," brilliantly showcasing his extraordinary vocal range and emotive capabilities. Alternating between piano and occasionally guitar, Hammill breathes new life into his complex compositions with a "perverse intensity" that only a vocalist of his caliber can deliver.
Release Highlights:
- The Usher Suite: Regarded by many fans as the "jewel" of the set, presented here in a haunting solo arrangement.
- Atmospheric Setting: Recorded in the unique acoustics of a Berlin church, adding a layer of gravity to the Singer-Songwriter and Progressive Rock themes.
- Key Tracks: Includes live interpretations of evocative pieces like "In Babelsberg" and "Abandon Ship!."
Whether you are a longtime devotee of the VdGG legacy or a collector of avant-garde singer-songwriter performances, this CD is an essential document of Peter Hammill’s unparalleled artistry during the early '90s.
