Opeth returns with one of their most ambitious and heavy releases in decades: The Last Will and Testament. This 2024 concept album, released via Reigning Phoenix Music, is a grand gothic tale structured like a legal document, primarily divided into sections (§1 through §7) that unravel a dark family secret following the death of a patriarch.
Musically, this release marks a monumental return to the band’s heavier roots. Fans of the Ghost Reveries and Watershed era will celebrate the reinstatement of Mikael Åkerfeldt’s devastating death metal growls, paired with the intricate progressive arrangements the band is known for. The album introduces drummer Walt Väyrynen, whose seamless integration provides a blistering pace and technical precision to the record's "claustrophobic" and "crushing" atmosphere.
Key Features & Guest Appearances:
- Epic Collaborations: Features narration and flute by Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull), additional vocals by Joey Tempest (Europe), and harp by Mia Westland.
- Orchestral Depth: Accompaniment by the London Session Orchestra adds a classical, cinematic layer to the progressive metal foundation.
- Limited Edition Media: This comprehensive set includes the album on both CD and Blu-ray, featuring Stereo and Multichannel mixes for the ultimate immersive listening experience.
From the haunting "Section" tracks to the revelatory final named song, The Last Will and Testament is a masterclass in sonic storytelling—a must-own for long-time followers and a perfect entry point for those seeking Opeth’s signature blend of darkness and light.
