Experience the raw, glitter-drenched energy of the band that birthed punk rock.
The New York Dolls were the ultimate catalysts of the 1970s Manhattan scene, blending the "dirty rock & roll" of the Rolling Stones with the anarchic noise of The Stooges and the infectious pop of 1960s girl groups. Great Big Kiss is a comprehensive compilation (reissuing material from Seven Day Weekend and Red Patent Leather) that captures the band’s seedy, nostalgic, and beautifully bombastic sound.
This release highlights the band's unique "junkie swagger" and their deep affection for Brill Building classics. From the iconic spoken-word intro of "Looking for a Kiss"—a direct homage to The Shangri-Las—to the tough, "choreographed-knife-fight" energy of "Jet Boy," this album showcases a band far ahead of its time. Led by David Johansen’s gristly baritone and the legendary guitar riffs of Johnny Thunders and Sylvain Sylvain, the Dolls paved the way for both punk nihilism and heavy metal machismo.
Key Tracks & Highlights:
- "Great Big Kiss" & "Looking for a Kiss": Essential tributes to 60s pop-soul defiance.
- "Trash" & "Jet Boy": The definitive blueprints for the glam-punk sound.
- "Who are the Mystery Girls?": A high-energy fan favorite showcasing the band's signature grit.
- "Stranded in the Jungle": A droll, "beautifully bombastic" cover that captures their playful irony.
Essential for fans of David Bowie, T. Rex, Mott the Hoople, and anyone wanting to hear the roots of the CBGB revolution.
