Released in 2009 by Reprise Records, Mastodon’s landmark album Crack the Skye represents a monumental leap into expansive progressive metal. Moving beyond raw sludge into deeper atmospheric and psychedelic territory, this release showcases the Atlanta quartet at their technical and creative peak, built around themes of out-of-body experiences and intricate musicality.
Driven by cleaner, more emotional vocal performances, the thunderous rhythm section of drummer Brann Dailor and bassist Troy Sanders, and the stellar fretwork of guitarists Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher, the album delivers heavy complexity balanced with soaring melody.
- "Oblivion": The melodic, atmospheric opener driven by memorable vocal harmonies.
- "Divinations": Kicks off with a distinct banjo intro before surging into an assault of classic heaviness.
- "The Last Baron": An intricate, progressive epic featuring dynamic shifts and standout basslines.
Whether you are a longtime fan or discovering their catalog for the first time, this limited edition release of Crack the Skye is an essential cornerstone of modern progressive heavy metal.
