Released in 1991 on Editions EG, All Heaven Broke Loose is the standout third studio album from Bill Bruford's Earthworks. Co-produced by visionary drummer Bill Bruford and experimental guitarist David Torn, the record features the acclaimed "Earthworks Mark I" lineup alongside Django Bates, Iain Ballamy, and Tim Harries.
Widely regarded as the lineup's most fully realized studio achievement, the album explores a boundary-pushing blend of modern jazz fusion and abstract aesthetics. The quartet moves beyond traditional structures and extended soloing into multi-themed, mischievous compositions—all anchored by Bruford’s signature precision and time sense.
Critical Highlights:
- Entertainment Weekly (Grade A): Called the album "evocative" and noted it "tells an engaging, abstract story, steeped in the spirit of jazz."
- AllMusic: Awarded a high 4.5-star rating.
- All About Jazz: Praised as "Earthworks Mark I's most fully-realized studio release."
A must-have CD release for collectors of progressive jazz, fusion, and the innovative catalog of Bill Bruford.
