Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s 2015 release, Multi-Love, signals a daring evolution for Ruban Nielson’s project. Moving beyond the psychedelic haze of their previous work, this album reveals a newfound discipline, blending intricate, layered arrangements with a sense of "noble mess" that keeps the listener constantly engaged.
Produced, mixed, and engineered entirely by Nielson, Multi-Love functions as a "wunderkammer" of musical ideas. The record masterfully traverses genres, incorporating elements of funk, R&B, synth-pop, and stoner rock. It is a record defined by its sharp bass lines, bubbling synthesizers, and Nielson’s signature falsetto, all held together by a tight, creative tension.
Key Highlights:
- Genre-Defying Sound: A seamless blend of '60s-inspired beat music, Giorgio Moroder-esque dance tracks, and smooth, infectious funk.
- Standout Tracks: Includes the title track "Multi-Love," the danceable "I Can’t Keep Checking My Phone," the brass-infused "Necessary Evil," and the epic seven-minute closer, "Puzzles."
- Masterful Production: A "fussy gear-head" approach that perfectly balances musical looseness with efficient, professional precision.
Whether you are a long-time fan of UMO's guitar-driven roots or a newcomer to their genre-bending experimentation, Multi-Love is an essential, ambitious record that redefines the band's musical future.
