Ultravox – U-Vox (Chrysalis, 1986)
Released on October 13, 1986, U-Vox stands as the eighth studio album from New Wave pioneers Ultravox. Serving as the final record from the band’s "classic" Midge Ure-led lineup before a two-decade hiatus, this release reached No. 9 on the UK Albums Chart. Produced by the band alongside legendary collaborator Conny Plank, the album captures a transitional moment as the group moved from dark, artsy synthesizers toward a brighter, soul-influenced pop-rock sound.
Often referred to by fans as "The Dreaded Pink Thing" due to its vibrant neon artwork, U-Vox features ambitious arrangements and high-profile collaborations. The album showcases a diverse sonic palette, ranging from the brass-heavy "Same Old Story" featuring Beggar & Co to the lush orchestral strings directed by Sir George Martin on "All in One Day."
Key Highlights:
- "Same Old Story": A glossy, grandiose opening track featuring backing vocals by Carol Kenyon.
- "All Fall Down": A unique Celtic-inspired track featuring arrangements by The Chieftains.
- "Follow Your Heart": A quintessential 80s pop-rock single that remains a favorite for melodic synth fans.
- Production: Recorded across iconic locations including Air Studios (London) and Windmill Lane (Dublin).
A must-have for completionists, U-Vox is a fascinating swan song of the 1980s New Wave era, blending the band’s signature synth-pop with mainstream rock and experimental folk textures.
