Step back in time to the courtly celebrations of the Middle Ages with Music for a Medieval Banquet (Il Solazzo), performed by the acclaimed early music ensemble The Newberry Consort under the direction of Mary Springfels. Released by the esteemed label Harmonia Mundi, this collection offers an authentic, immersive soundtrack to a 14th-century feast.
The recording showcases the vocal talents of countertenor Drew Minter and mezzo-soprano Judith Malafronte alongside virtuosic period instrumentation featuring the vielle, citole, lute, rebec, and viol. The repertoire highlights the rich musical heritage of the era, drawing from the famous Codex Faenza and the works of Italian master Francesco Landini, with standout selections including "Non al suo amante" and "Donna, s'i' t'ò fallito."
