Released on March 21, 1994, via Beggars Banquet, Up To Our Hips represents a pivotal evolution in The Charlatans' discography. Moving away from their "baggy" dance-rock origins, this third studio album explores a darker, more atmospheric landscape that blends late-60s psychedelia with funk-infused hip-hop rhythms.
The record peaked at number 8 on the UK Albums Chart, proving the band's enduring relevance during the transition into the Britpop era. The album's sonic depth is anchored by Jon Brookes' powerful drumming and ambitious textures, ranging from catchy radio-ready singles to sprawling, moody instrumentals.
Key Tracks Include:
- "Can’t Get Out of Bed" – A standout chart success.
- "I Never Want an Easy Life If Me and He Were Ever to Get There" – Showcasing the band's evolving songwriting.
- "Jesus Hairdo" – A fan favorite that captures the album's unique groove.
- "Feel Flows" – A six-minute instrumental highlight.
While contemporary reviews were mixed, Up To Our Hips is now celebrated as an underrated turning point. It is an essential release for collectors looking to hear The Charlatans cementing their identity through musical experimentation and brooding, soulful breadth.
