Originally released in 1973, Atem stands as a landmark release from pioneering German electronic group Tangerine Dream. Representing a pivotal moment in the band's catalog alongside masterpieces like Zeit and Phaedra, Atem presents forty minutes of mind-expanding, pure space music that moves far beyond the traditional confines of rock and roll.
Composed and performed by Edgar Froese, Peter Baumann, and Christopher Franke, the album achieves a sound that is more melodic and atmospheric than the band's earlier, highly dissonant work. Utilizing a rich palette of Mellotron, VCS3 synthesizers, organ, and Chris Franke’s thrilling early percussion work, Atem creates an alien, modern classical lexicon that helped define the Berlin School of electronic music.
