Experience a defining chapter in the resurgence of British heavy metal legends with the 2 Originals Of Saxon compilation. This 2-CD reissue package from Steamhammer (2008) brings together two powerhouse studio albums Metalhead (1999) and Killing Ground (2001), showcasing the band’s evolution into a heavier, more modern era.
As standard-bearers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), Saxon utilized these releases to prove their enduring relevance. Metalhead marked a shift toward a darker, grittier atmosphere, while Killing Ground—the band’s 20th album—perfectly balanced speed metal energy with progressive depth and blues-rock grit. Produced by Charlie Bauerfeind, these recordings feature a "Teutonic" edge, achieved by layering Saxon’s classic Marshall amplifier sound with heavy German Engl tones.
Release Highlights:- Killing Ground: A high-octane title track featuring a stirring, martial-style chorus.
- Metalized Classics: A faithful yet heavy cover of King Crimson’s "In the Court of the Crimson King."
- Shadows on the Wall: A multi-layered, soaring epic reflecting on the birth of nuclear warfare—widely considered one of the band’s finest tracks.
- Coming Home: A raw, bluesy rocker that captures the band’s early-career spirit.
Featuring the powerhouse vocals of Biff Byford and the thunderous drumming of Fritz Randow, this compilation is an essential addition for fans of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and pure British Steel.
