Placebo – Special K (Elevator Music, 2001)
Experience a definitive moment in turn-of-the-century alternative rock with the Special K enhanced CD single. Released in early 2001 via Elevator Music, this track stands as a centerpiece of the band’s third studio album, Black Market Music. Dubbed by critics as "twisted neo-punk pop," the single captures Placebo at a creative crossroads, moving away from the pure "mascara-smeared" Britpop rebellion of their debut toward a more experimental, vibrant sound.
Characterized by Brian Molko’s distinct vocals and the band’s "Placebo Mark II" evolution, "Special K" explores themes of drug-induced euphoria and romantic obsession with less cryptic, more direct lyricism. Musically, the release showcases the band’s willingness to push the alternative rock envelope, blending heavy guitar melodies with glam and electronic influences.
