Experience the hauntingly beautiful fusion of Middle Eastern traditon and Western pop with Ofra Haza’s 1989 landmark release, Desert Wind.
As Haza’s first full English-language album, Desert Wind represents a pivotal moment in her international career. Co-produced by the legendary Thomas Dolby, the album successfully bridges the gap between exotic Yemenite heritage and late-80s dance-pop. While the lyrics reached a global audience in English, Haza maintained her roots, stating, "it may be in English, but it’s still my message."
The album is celebrated for its atmospheric depth and Haza’s incredible "lilting contralto" vocals. Key highlights include:
- "Fatamorgana" (Mirage): A powerful homage to her parents’ journey from Yemen, featuring traditional Arabic chants performed by Haza’s own mother.
- "Wish Me Luck" and "I Want To Fly": Tracks that showcase Haza’s ability to command a melodic pop hook.
- "Ya Ba Ye": A standout moment that captures the "strange and new" sound Haza sought to bring to the world stage.
This CD release from Мир Музыки offers a unique opportunity to own a piece of World Music history. Whether you are a fan of synth-pop or traditional ethnic sounds, Desert Wind remains a testament to the enduring legacy of the "Madonna of the East."
