Originally released in 1987 by Earache Records, Scum by Napalm Death stands as the monumental debut that defined the grindcore genre. Uniquely recorded across two separate sessions by two distinct lineups—united only by drummer Mick Harris—the record seamlessly bridges the raw energy of anarcho-punk with the ferocious weight of early extreme metal.
Renowned for its blistering tempos, harsh noise influences, and ultra-short compositions, Scum pushes aggression to its absolute limits. The tracklist includes genre staples such as "Instinct of Survival," "Siege of Power," the relentless title track "Scum," and the infamous six-second blast "You Suffer."
Key Highlights:
- Genre Landmark: Widely celebrated as the foundational cornerstone of grindcore.
- Critical Acclaim: Featured in Robert Dimery's 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die and voted among the top British albums of all time by Kerrang! readers.
- Fast & Uncompromising: Packed with essential, hyper-speed anthems like "Prison Without Walls," "Life?", and "Deceiver."
