Released in 1980, Japan’s Gentlemen Take Polaroids stands as a landmark in the band’s discography—a magisterial, cinematic masterpiece that serves as the definitive bridge between their new wave roots and the avant-pop experimentalism that would define David Sylvian’s later solo career.
Often cited as the album where the band truly discovered their unique voice, Gentlemen Take Polaroids offers a polished, atmospheric soundscape. Featuring the iconic fretless bass work of Mick Karn and the fluid, precise percussion of Steve Jansen, the record is both icy and grand. Tracks like the hypnotic title track and the flawless, liquid-gold composition "Swing" highlight the group's technical prowess and adventurous arrangements.
Key Highlights:
- A Definitive Sound: Unquestionably the pivot point where Japan shed past influences to create their own aesthetic.
- The Musicianship: Features arguably the best bass performances of Mick Karn’s career.
- Collector’s Edition: This Caroline Blue Plate CD reissue provides an essential experience for fans of art-rock, ambient, and lush synth-pop.
Step into the Palace of Versailles of synth-pop. Whether you are a long-time devotee of the band's evolution or a new listener discovering their influence on 80s and 90s art-pop, this album is an essential addition to any collection.
