Experience the dawn of an icon. Portfolio is the debut studio album by the incomparable Grace Jones, marking the beginning of her legendary tenure with Island Records. Recorded at the height of the disco era with the "father of the disco mix," producer Tom Moulton, this album captures the sound of Studio 54 glamour and high-fashion defiance.
The album is celebrated for its ambitious Side One: a continuous, 18-minute medley that reimagines Broadway showtunes through a Hi-NRG lens. Jones showcases her "impressively polished" vocals by deconstructing classics and placing them atop vigorous strings and driving dance rhythms. This reissue serves as a vital reminder that her musical journey began long before her transition to New Wave, asserting her status as a disco trailblazer.
Key Highlights:
- Epic Medley: A seamless "Partially Mixed" experience featuring radical interpretations of "Send In The Clowns" and "What I Did For Love."
- Broadway Reimagined: Includes a "perky" and unique rendition of "Tomorrow" from the musical Annie.
- High-Fashion Disco: The quintessential sound of the mid-70s underground, bridging the gap between musical theater and the dance floor.
An essential purchase for collectors and fans of classic disco, soul, and the evolving artistry of Grace Jones.
