Deep Purple returns with =1, a landmark 2024 release marking the first studio outing to feature guitar virtuoso Simon McBride. This 13-track collection finds the legendary band recapturing their hard rock roots, blending a heavier complexion with the classic "groove" and organ-driven power that has defined their 56-year career. The album is a testament to the band’s enduring vitality, following a string of gold-certified successes.
Critics and fans alike have noted the "freshness" McBride brings to the lineup, leaning back into high-energy rock and "boogie" while maintaining the sophisticated musicianship of Don Airey, Ian Paice, and Roger Glover. Frontman Ian Gillan remains a focal point, delivering soulful "speak-sing" storytelling and his signature screams with a voice that has lost none of its distinctive charm.
Key Highlights:
- "Show Me": A relentless, modern groove showcasing tasteful back-and-forth between synth and guitar.
- "Pictures of You": A standout single praised for its immensely memorable chorus and classic hard rock tone.
- "If I Were You": A dramatic, bluesy ballad featuring an orchestra and soulful, mournful guitar work.
- "Lazy Sod": A driving rock track that squeezes four brilliant solos into under four minutes.
This CD/DVD edition is essential for collectors, documenting one of the world’s greatest rock bands performing at the peak of their modern ability. Contemporary yet classic, =1 proves that Deep Purple remains a dominant force in the genre.
