Burzum presents Umskiptar (Metamorphoses), a compelling chapter in the discography of one of the most influential and debated names in the atmospheric black metal and ambient genres. Released through Byelobog Productions, this reissue (BYE010DBK) continues Varg Vikernes' exploration of Norse themes and traditional poetry.
Marking a departure from the "juvenilia" of his early 90s black metal roots, Umskiptar leans heavily into a slower, more atmospheric soundscape. The album is characterized by its focus on narrative and rhythm, distancing itself from the raw aggression of the past to embrace a more mature, conceptual approach to extreme music. Upon its original release, it gained significant commercial traction, even appearing on the UK Independent album charts alongside mainstream contemporaries.
