Bob Mould’s 2009 solo effort, Life and Times, finds the legendary former Hüsker Dü and Sugar frontman delivering a deeply personal and introspective narrative. Released on CD through his own Granary Music (licensed to Anti-), this album showcases Mould’s signature DIY ethic; he wrote, performed, and produced nearly every element of the record in his home studio.

Critics and fans have noted the album’s similarity to his seminal debut Workbook. While the material is framed as a "quieter, sparser" collection of free-verse reflections, it maintains the muscular energy of his previous work. Tracks often begin with stripped-back acoustic guitar and Mould's distinctive vocals before exploding into dense, layered "guitar assaults" featuring bass, keyboards, and multitracked harmonies.

The album features exceptional rhythm work from drummer John Wurster and include standout tracks such as:

  • Life and Times
  • The Breach
  • City Lights (Days Go By)
  • Bad Blood Better
  • I’m Sorry, Baby, But You Can’t Stand In My Light Any More

Recorded with a minimalist outboard chain and raw, amplified energy, Life and Times is a powerful testament to Mould’s enduring influence on the alternative and indie rock landscape.
