Bad Bad Hats return with Walkman, their infectious 2021 release via Don Giovanni Records. Marking their first studio album in three years, Walkman is widely celebrated as the Minneapolis trio’s strongest work to date, blending their "caffeinated" indie-pop roots with a newfound willingness to let the music simmer and take risks.
Centered around the songwriting of Kerry Alexander, the album explores themes of love and the nostalgic power of music. The record balances feel-good, foot-tapping rhythms with "racing guitar licks" and Alexander’s signature soft, sincere vocals. From the punchy indie-rock energy of "Milky Way" and "Detroit Basketball" to the atmospheric, jazzy send-off of "Year of the Crab," the album delivers a magnetic collection of tracks that feel both relatable and unpredictable.
Key Tracks:
- Walkman: An upbeat, nostalgic anthem about the transportive power of falling in love.
- Milky Way: A standout track featuring some of the band's hardest-hitting guitar work.
- Quarter Past: A chill, rhythmic highlight with poignant, hopeful lyrics.
- Detroit Basketball: An edgy, bass-driven track that showcases the band's rock influences.
For fans of Hippo Campus, Soccer Mommy, or The Walters, Walkman is a must-have addition to any indie-pop collection, capturing a band at the height of their creative power.
