Atomic Rooster – Devil's Answer (Receiver Records, 1989)
Dive into the dark, progressive soundscapes of one of the 1970s' most formidable heavy prog acts. This 1989 compilation reissue from Receiver Records captures the essence of the band's initial 1970–1971 period, showcasing the foundational work of Vincent Crane and John DuCann.
Devil's Answer serves as a testament to Crane’s masterful ability to paint "darkness" through organ and piano-driven textures—blending murky jazz influences with hard-hitting riffs. While the collection focuses on the band's first three albums, it highlights their experimental spirit and sophisticated interplay, moving effortlessly from the bluesy, baritone-led melodies of their debut to the "aural blizzards" of later tracks.
Key Highlights:
- Prog-Rock Mastery: Experience the interplay that rivaled the greats of the era, defined by Crane’s haunting organ work and DuCann’s sharp, riff-driven guitar delivery.
- Experimental Depth: Includes standout tracks like "Death Walks Behind You," "V.U.G," and "Seven Streets."
- Collector’s Insight: A focused look at the band's early development, offering a curated cross-section of their most influential experimental phase.
An essential addition for fans of progressive rock, heavy psych, and the distinct, experimental legacy of Atomic Rooster.
